Urban legend no more: UK family drugged on sleeper train

I honestly didn’t think this happened in real life, only in the “Dangers & Annoyances” section of a Lonely Planet guidebook. From the Daily Mail:

A family spoke of their ordeal yesterday at the hands of robbers who they believe drugged them as they slept on an overnight train through France.

Iain Macaskill, 43, was travelling on a sleeper service from Paris to the Mediterranean resort of Argeles when he and his wife Anita, 44, were targeted.

The Macaskills, their two children, Connor, 14, and Lauren, 12, and their niece Jade, 15, went to sleep in their bunks but woke up the next morning in a groggy stupor.

Mrs Macaskill then discovered that her handbag – and £425 – had disappeared…

The French police were last night investigating the thefts on board the ten-hour journey, which took place a fortnight ago.

Mr Macaskill added: ‘We went to bed about 11pm but my wife and I woke up around 2am feeling very odd. We hadn’t been drinking.

‘After that neither of us could get back to sleep properly and it was about 6am when we realised the things had been stolen.

‘My wife was absolutely convinced we had been in some sort of drug-induced sleep. By then the thief was long gone.

Sounds like a good starting point for the sequel to The Hangover. Or better yet, Hostel 3: A Family Affair.
